The Buena Vista Museum of Natural History states that their specific purpose of is to promote the scientific and educational aspects of earth history, particularly paleontology and anthropology. The museum holds a collection of fossils from Kern County, an educational collection of area gems and minerals and Native American artifacts from local Yokuts group.

The museum is open every Wednesday through Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and by appointment. The museum is closed on most major holidays.

Admission to the museum is $3.00 for adults, $2.00 for children, seniors, and students with ID, and $2.00 for student chaperones. One teacher is admitted free for each class. There is an adult group rate of $2.00 each for groups of 20 or more.
